How to Make Calendula Cream at Home

Calendula cream is renowned for its soothing and healing properties. This botanical-infused cream is often used to alleviate skin irritations, such as minor cuts, burns, and insect bites. Its natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities make it a popular choice for promoting skin healing, reducing redness, and providing gentle relief for dry or sensitive skin.

Here's a simple recipe for making your own calendula cream at home.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of dried calendula petals

  • 2 cups of organic olive oil

  • 1/4 cup of beeswax

  • A few drops of essential oil (optional, for fragrance)

  • Double boiler or a heat-safe glass bowl over a pot

  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer

  • Glass jars for storage

Instructions:

  1. Infusing Calendula Oil:

    • Gently crush the dried calendula petals to help release their oils.

    • In a double boiler or a heat-safe glass bowl placed over a pot of water, combine the crushed calendula petals and carrier oil.

    • Heat the mixture on low for about 2-3 hours, ensuring it doesn't boil. This process will infuse the oil with the beneficial properties of calendula.

    • Remove from heat and let the mixture cool. Once cooled, strain the oil using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer to remove the petals.

  2. Creating Calendula Cream:

    • In a clean double boiler or heat-safe glass bowl, melt the beeswax pellets.

    • Once the beeswax is melted, add the infused calendula oil and mix well.

    • If desired, add a few drops of your chosen essential oil for fragrance. Lavender or chamomile are good options.

    • Stir the mixture until everything is well combined and uniform.

  3. Cooling and Storing:

    • Carefully pour the mixture into clean glass jars or containers.

    • Allow the mixture to cool and solidify. As it cools, the cream will thicken.

Your homemade calendula cream is now ready to use! Apply it to minor cuts, burns, insect bites, dry skin, or any other skin irritations. Remember to do a patch test before using it on a larger area, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Keep the cream stored in a cool, dark place to maintain its potency. The natural properties of calendula combined with nourishing oils and beeswax can offer gentle and soothing care for your skin.
